Frequently Asked Questions
How sugaring, waxing, and facials work, how to prepare, and what to expect afterward.
Sugar & Wax
What is sugaring and waxing?
Sugaring is a form of hair removal dating back to 1900 BC in Persia! The paste is just sugar, water, and citric acid, kept at a barely lukewarm temperature. Waxing is a form of hair removal most of us already know. It is made up mostly of either beeswax or rosin, and is generally kept at a higher melting point than sugar paste.
How does sugar work?
I handle the sugar as a ball at my fingertips, gently applying it multiple times, either with or against the hair growth, to coat and adhere the hairs into the paste. Once it is applied, I flick the paste off in sections to remove the hairs by the root.
How does waxing work?
There are two main waxing mediums. The first is soft wax: a thin layer is applied with a disposable applicator, followed by a piece of pellon laid on top, which is then swiftly removed. Hard wax is more commonly used for intimate areas. It is also applied with a disposable applicator and hardens, requiring no pellon for removal.
Does sugaring and waxing hurt?
While every person's pain tolerance differs, the consistent consensus is that sugaring hurts less than other forms of hair removal. The key to preventing unnecessary discomfort with either is making sure the temperature doesn't tug the hairs on application, and removing it in sections small enough to hold the skin taut in a controlled way. With over a decade of experience, I have perfected this combination to make your waxing or sugaring as comfortable as possible!
How do I prepare for my hair removal appointment?
Most importantly, make sure your hair growth is at least a quarter inch long. That is the minimum length usually needed for effective removal. Beyond that, exfoliating and applying a light moisturizer within 24 hours of your appointment helps lift the dead skin cells covering the hairs, gently clear ingrowns, and protect your skin's barrier.
Should I choose sugar or wax?
Generally this depends on your skin's sensitivity and hair density. If you don't have a preference from past experience, I can help you decide in the treatment room during your consultation. I will always choose the option that is most comfortable and quickest, and that gives the best results.
What are the contraindications?
You may not be a candidate for waxing or sugaring if any of the following apply:
- Current sunburn
- Use of Differin, retinol, or another vitamin A product in the past 7 days
- Use of Accutane (isotretinoin) within the past 12 months
- Currently taking any blood thinning medication
- Laser, chemical peels, or other advanced treatments in the area within the past 14 days
What is the aftercare for sugaring and waxing?
For 24 to 48 hours after your appointment, please avoid:
- Baths
- Pools
- Saunas
- Hot tubs
- Working out
After a Brazilian, also avoid:
- Sexual intercourse
After an underarm service, also avoid:
- Applying deodorant
How do I prevent ingrown hairs?
The best way to prevent ingrown hairs is a separate skincare routine just for the area where you receive hair removal, built around both exfoliation and hydration. I recommend the Smoothing Serum for exfoliating and the Hydrate & Heal Balm for hydrating, both from the Sweet & True brand. You can buy these during your appointment.
You can also add the Brazilian Ingrown Prevention Treatment right after your Brazilian wax or sugar service. Think of it as a facial for your Brazilian!
Can I leave hair behind for my Brazilian wax or sugar?
Absolutely, you can leave as little or as much hair behind as you prefer. It is common to leave a triangle or strip on the mons pubis if you like to keep some. There is no right or wrong choice here, go with whatever feels best for you.
How often should I get sugaring or waxing?
Every 3 weeks is the sweet spot! That is the right amount of time for the hair to grow back to the shortest removable length while keeping your growth pattern in sync, so you get the smoothest results. I don't suggest going longer than 5 weeks between appointments, since the hair pattern falls out of sync and ingrowns become more common.
Facials & Skincare
What exactly is a facial?
A facial is a treatment focused on the face, neck, and décolleté. Not all facials are the same, they differ depending on the modalities included and the concerns being addressed.
How do I know which facial to book?
If none of the facial descriptions jump out at you, I suggest the Herbal Remedy Customized Facial. It is my standard facial: a thorough skin analysis, exfoliation, extractions, treatments, and facial massage. You get a little bit of everything!
I'm concerned with acne. Which treatments are right for me?
My most popular service for acne is the Extended Herbal Remedy Customized Facial (90 minutes) with High Frequency and Light Therapy to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. It allows plenty of time for a deeper exfoliation, intentionally gentle extractions, and care for the skin barrier afterward, so you leave with healthier skin.
I'm concerned with dark spots. Which treatments are right for me?
My most popular service for hyperpigmentation is the Herbal Remedy Customized Facial (60 minutes) with an Organic Chemical Peel add-on to even your skin tone and brighten the skin. Consistency is key with any skin concern, but especially hyperpigmentation, so this is best scheduled every 2 to 3 weeks when possible.
I really want to relax. Which facial is right for me?
I prioritize regulating you in any facial, but the ultimate one for relaxation is the Ashwagandha Lymphatic Drainage Facial. It uses so many massage modalities to melt you, with slow, intentional movements that relax both your mind and every muscle I can reach, from your décolleté to your scalp. Personally, the Rosemary Sage Scalp and Neck Massage fits beautifully into this treatment.
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning uses a scalpel to remove dead skin cells and vellus hair, with instant results, very little downtime, and no discomfort. The Kombucha Dermaplaning Facial is one of my most popular services.
How often should I get facials?
I recommend a facial every 2 to 4 weeks when you are addressing a specific skin concern, or every 4 weeks if you are focused more on the relaxation side of facial treatments.
What is the aftercare for facials?
For 24 to 48 hours after a facial, please avoid:
- Exfoliation
- Excess sweating
- High body temperature
For 72 hours after dermaplaning specifically:
- No exfoliation
- No topical prescription products
- No facial waxing or sugaring
